Mind Map of Mathematics with an Islamic Perspective
“Mathematics is a language God has written the universe in.” - Galileo Galilei.
Introduction to Mathematics
Math is the science of quantity, pattern, order, structure, and relation that has continuously evolved from basic practices of counting, measurement, and the symmetric study of shapes. It primarily involves applying logical reasoning and quantitative computation to find optimal solutions to problems. In the fields of engineering, biology, medicine, and the natural sciences, it is widely acknowledged as an essential computational tool.
Introduce math with an Islamic perspective.
In Islam, seeking knowledge is encouraged, and understanding the order in creation reflects the wisdom of Allah. As Allah says:
Thus, learning mathematics is not only a worldly
skill but also a form of understanding Allah’s system and wisdom.
Fundamentals of Mathematics
Math fundamentals are the basic building blocks of mathematics. They include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, and things like number theory, algebra, and geometry. These concepts are crucial because they serve as the foundation for more complex math topics.
Main Branches of Mathematics (with Islamic Perspective)
Mathematics is like a superhero with different powers! You've got arithmetic to handle everyday tasks like shopping or splitting the bill with friends. Here are the main branches of mathematics:
Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and statistics.
Mathematics is like a superhero with different powers! You've got arithmetic to handle everyday tasks like shopping or splitting the bill with friends. Here are the main branches of mathematics:
Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and statistics.
1. Arithmetic – Balance and Justice
Arithmetic is one of the oldest and most elementary branches of mathematics, originating from the Greek word ‘Arithmos,’ which means ‘number.’ Arithmetic involves the study of numbers, especially the properties of traditional operations, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The arithmetic operators based on these operations are ‘+’, ‘-’, ‘×’, and ‘÷’. An arithmetic arrangement that helps us discover the patterns in increasing and decreasing numbers. Allah says:
“وَأَوْفُوا الْكَيْلَ
وَالْمِيزَانَ بِالْقِسْطِ”
“Give full measure and weight in justice.” (Surah
Al-An‘am 6:152)
2. Algebra – Logic & Discovery
Algebra is a branch of mathematics that uses mathematical
statements to describe relationships between things that vary. These variables
include things like the relationship between the supply of an object and its
price. When we use a mathematical statement to describe a relationship, we
often use letters to represent the quantity that varies, since it is not a
fixed amount.
The Prophet Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The seeking of knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.” (Ibn Majah 224)
3. Geometry—Beauty of Divine Design
Geometry is the branch of mathematics concerned with the shape of individual objects, spatial relationships among various objects, and the properties of surrounding space. It is one of the oldest branches of mathematics, having arisen in response to such practical problems as those found in surveying, and its name is derived from Greek words meaning “Earth measurement.” Eventually, it was realized that geometry need not be limited to the study of flat surfaces (plane geometry) and rigid three-dimensional objects (solid geometry) but that even the most abstract thoughts and images might be represented and developed in geometric terms. Allah says:
“الَّذِي خَلَقَ
فَسَوَّىٰ”
“He who created and proportioned.” (Surah Al-A‘la 87:2)
4. Trigonometry – Signs in the Sky
Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics that focuses on relationships between the sides and angles of triangles. The word "trigonometry" comes from the Latin derivative of the Greek words for "triangle" (trigonon) and "measure" (metron). Trigonometry (Trig) is an intricate part of other branches of mathematics, such as geometry, algebra, and calculus. Allah says:
“الشَّمْسُ
وَالْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ”
“The sun and the moon move by precise calculation.”
(Surah Ar-Rahman 55:5)
5. Calculus – Change & Motion
The word "calculus" comes from Latin, meaning "small stone," because it is like understanding something by looking at small pieces.
Differential calculus cuts something into small
pieces to find how it changes.
Integral calculus joins (integrates) the small pieces together
to find how much there is.
Calculus is the study of how things change. It
provides a framework for modeling systems in which there is change and a way
to deduce the predictions of such models.
I am sure you know lots about how things change. And you have a qualitative notion of calculus. For example, the concept of speed of motion is a notion straight from calculus, though it surely existed long before calculus did, and you know lots about it.
Calculus studies change and motion—symbolizing how Allah continuously transforms the world (night to day, life to death). Allah says:
> “تُولِجُ اللَّيْلَ فِي النَّهَارِ وَتُولِجُ النَّهَارَ فِي اللَّيْلِ”
“You cause the night to enter the day and the day to enter the night.”
(Surah Aal-Imran 3:27)
6. Statistics—Understanding Allah’s Signs
Statistics is a branch of applied mathematics that involves the collection, description, analysis, and interpretation of data drawn from a sample of a larger population. Statistical sampling is used in medicine, finance, marketing, and many other fields to increase understanding and inform decision-making.
The mathematical theories behind statistics rely heavily on differential and integral calculus, linear algebra, and probability theory. Statistics helps us interpret data and recognize patterns—reflecting the divine order and precision in creation.
“إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ
السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ... لَآيَاتٍ لِأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ”
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the
earth are signs for people of understanding.” (Surah Aal-Imran 3:190)
Conclusion:
Math is not just about numbers. It teaches balance, justice, and honesty. Allah tells us to be fair in measure and correct in weight. Every part of math shows Allah’s perfect system. When we study math with faith, it helps us see the order and beauty that Allah has made in this world.
